Joeman's Games Special - The Illusion Series Part 1 - Castle of Illusion (Mega Drive and Master System)

The Illusion series in the gaming world - Part 1

Featuring:

Two versions of Castle of Illusion

Introduction

This special will be divided into parts , as they are 5 games that will be analyzed in detail . Would be strange and exhausting to read it all together in a single post.

The series of Illusion was always very prestigious since his first game released .

Released exclusively for the Sega consoles, there are five games that are part of the "series ".  This does not mean that all fit together , but because it is worlds of illusions ( in almost all games have phases with giant things ) , we can see there some sense of SEQUENCE in the series .

All they have Mickey as the protagonist , only World of Illusion have  Donald to follow the bugger mouse through stages .

At that time , Disney and Sega had one unbeatable partnership , so much so that Sega was responsible for  games of Disney to the console .

For SNES , this work was in charge of not least , Capcom .

Well, as the first game of the series was released for Mega Drive is from him that we get .

::::: Castle of Illusion - Mega Drive :::::

"... Mickey plunges into a cup of coffee and swims between sugar lumps that float there ..."

Year : 1990

Castle of Illusion messed with a lot of people when he left . Had (and still has ) gorgeous graphics , simple gameplay  and easy , wonderful music and a challenge as to any age . The game ended soon as becoming classic platform of 16-bit Sega , one of the most critically acclaimed games of all time .

In the game , we control Mickey Mouse, the gay rat  of Disney . He was dancing and Minnie IN THE MIDDLE OF THE MAT, when a witch appeared and kidnapped Minnie . Mickey must save his beloved in a distant ( buzzword ) world , where a malevolent witch ( another buzzword ) to held at his castle ( the witch ) .

For this, Mickey must collect COLORED GEMS and form a RAINBOW in order to reach the Witch Castle. The witch name stuck in my (and I believe many of you reading this ) , MIZRABEL ( ok , is the latest buzzword to put here) .

The game takes place in stages themes , all hidden behind the doors of a huge castle . Each door leads to a different world with a different theme . Then the differences begin to Master System version .

In Mega Drive version is not possible to choose which of the first three worlds the player can get , being required to follow the sequence of the doors .

:::::::::: STAGES ::::::::::

First door:  Forest World

Total cliche, but at the time it was successful. The Forest of Castle of Illusion  of  Mega is less exploitative than the version of Master, which included more subways amidst the insects.

In Mega have a continuous path with vines, killers mushrooms and some trees who love hiking there. After this first step, one giant apple chases Mickey and he comes in the second part of the stage, where jumps on loose leaves in the air.

Then, late in the evening, where bats and ghosts emerge, the stage is a little more complicated. After that comes the boss, similar to the 8-bit version, but with a difference: it is much easier here.

Another difference between the two versions is that, here, Mickey can collect apples / balls / other collectibles to throw in enemies , in the Master, only  worth throwing fixed objects or jumping, something that does not exist in Mega. Another difference: in Master we have to find hidden stars, in Mega, none of that.

Second door: Toys World

Pratically has nothing to do with the version of his younger brother. On the Mega, the stage is long, with the right to climbs and descents, plus the screen that flips the second stage of phase. The boss is a little clown who dismounts to hit Mickey.

Third door: .. uh .. canyons? Mountains world?

the tea of this bright-purple mushroom must  be good

Now  I'll be straight: to me they totally shit at this stage.   The Master System version features one of the most memorable stages of every retro gamer who has played this game, the famous  CANDY STAGE. Here we have a mountain to climb with full of geysers and then a sort of abandoned temple with water rising and falling.

The boss is a lunatic who is jumping around the stage, lost easy in CHARISMA  to chocolate bar in the Master System. Strangely, the music is the same to the Candy stage for Master System.

Fourth door / second floor: Library

tell the truth, does not look like the dragon from Neverending Story?

Cool stage, nice music and some boring enemies. Here is a remarkable scene in the whole game: Migay plunges into a cup of coffee and swims between sugar lumps that float there.

Another nostalgia: Mickey enters in a bottle of milk and will stop in a  setting filled with floating candies on  a milk sea. The boss is in another bottle of milk.

This boss reminiscent of the dragon movie Neverending Story, is a monster that is plunging into the lake of milk trying to hit Mickey.

Fifth door / second floor: Clock Tower

Long stage, maybe one of the most difficulty. The beginning of this stage is a castle, statues come to life and some acid pools await Mickey's ass.

After that, water tunnels full of piranhas require skill. The tower comes next: the ascent requires attention to jumps between the gears and the damn bats.

The boss is the watchman clock, easy to beat.

 Witch Mizrabel Castle

walking happily in the rainbow

ETERNAL! This fucking place is not exist. Passed the tower, now will face the fucking witch. Which, incidentally, has totally changed and  become quite  the MODEL, all skinny and tall.

Maybe they blend the tower along with the Castle, or something.

The scheme is that Minnie is whimpering  in the center of the screen  while  Mickey fight against this dirty witch. The fight is not so easy, you need to hit it several times while she teleports in various directions  and throws his ghosts in various directions.

Unsuccessful, Minnie is released and the game ends to that end that only Disgay knows.

::::: Castle of Illusion - Master System :::::

"... even forcing the player to test your reflexes jumping around in ghosts WITHOUT DROPPING into the abyss ..."

Year: 1990

The story is the same, the theme is the same but there are crucial differences between the two versions. Personally, I prefer the version of the Master System. I find it clean, neat, with better music and stages. But this is a personal opinion.

:::::::::: STAGES ::::::::::

In the Master,  you can pick up the order of the ports, ie: if you have already done, you can start by any world that has found it easier.

First door: Forest World

This world is so cliche. Every game of cuddly platform has one of these, it seems LAW. This one is a little different of FATHER version : has more underground parts full of insects and a outdoor area before the boss, with the right to jumps in the air leaves. The boss is a spinning tree, already spoken before.

Second door: Toys World

Simple stage, with own enemies and full of secret passages and even a chance to choose which way to go.

Especially the end of it, where you need to collect a key to open the door to the boss, who is a damn bouncy doll.

Third door: Candy World

Here lives one of the most memorable stages of 8 bits: a stage entirely made of sweets, very cool concept of time. It begins with  the SCREEN that moves itself forward, forcing Mickey to jumping out to save himself.

After this, we go through gallons of ice cream surrounded by chocolate bars, donuts following the thread of Mickey, a lake of milk with dolphins  and a boss who is a huge bar of chocolate. Smoked stage, yes, but very interesting and nostalgic.

Fourth door / second floor: Library

The library of the Master version differs slightly of Mega Drive. We have a cup of coffee, we have planes in the scene and we have moths wandering in books.

What changes here is the boss: a book that throws letters in Mickey, and the player must jump in these  letters to achieve the book face.

Fifth door / second floor: Clock tower

The tower of the Master System version is more interesting, with own enemies, some secret passages and a bizarre boss : a grandfather clock that releases a smiley face. She is flying through the scene with Mickey trying to hit your gears.

Passing the tower, Mickey manages to gather all the gems and go to the last stage before breaking the face of the witch bitch.

Witch's Castle

Bizarre castle, where dead  knights come to life, naughty spiders descend from the ceiling and some ghosts welcomes you.

The Castle has 3 parts: the initial, where exploration is more than anything, the second step with the screen even force the player to test your reflexes jumping around in ghosts WITHOUT DROPPING into the abyss and the third part, where we have three doors, one of which leads to the infamous Dragon.

This Dragon is like a shield of the Witch, coming before it to kill Migay.

Witch Mizrabel

The only way to hit it is to throw the lamp on it, unlike the  Mega version where the  Mickey jumps in the witch and solved the parade.

Well, this is the first part with these two classics of the 8/16 bit, in the next chapter, Land of Illusion gives her air of grace, with creative stages, superb music and more news, a real breakthrough for Castle of Illusion.
